Nella costa atlantica a nord della Colombia, si trova la Ciénaga Grande di Santa Marta, un complesso lagunare di acque salmastre delimitato a Est dalle montagne, a Nord dall’oceano e a Ovest dal delta del fiume Magdalena.
A cavallo degli anni 2000, la zona è teatro di una sanguinosa serie di massacri da parte dei paramilitari delle AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) per il controllo strategico dell’area. La popolazione locale subisce la violenza in modo devastante: molti civili sono torturati o assassinati, tanti altri per sopravvivere sono costretti ad abbandonare le proprie terre e le proprie case.
È qui che nel dicembre 2014, David, un antropologo italiano, incontra Guillermo, difensore dei diritti umani, che segue le battaglie legali degli sfollati della zona e che, proprio per questo motivo, ha ricevuto minacce di morte.
Guillermo conduce David a conoscere i diretti testimoni della guerra civile: lungo le strade polverose e le rotte fluviali, tra le palafitte del villaggio flottante di Nueva Venecia e le rovine desolanti dell’abbandonata Santa Rita.
Un microcosmo misterioso e arcano, apparentemente immutabile e collegato con il mondo esterno solo mediante il fiume Magdalena.
Grazie al coraggio delle persone che hanno deciso di fare ritorno, la zona della Ciénaga Grande si sta lentamente ripopolando e la comunità sconvolta da anni di guerra tra bande armate ha di nuovo sete di giustizia e dignità.
La battaglia di Guillermo e dei suoi assistiti è uno dei pochi baluardi di resistenza alle logiche della sopraffazione, così come alla totale assenza dello Stato. Attraverso le parole degli intervistati si dipana una serie di racconti che ripercorrono i fili perduti nella memoria di queste città invisibili.
Racconti dolorosi, altrimenti destinati all’oblio, custoditi per anni nelle acque del fiume Magdalena.

On the Atlantic coast, north of Colombia, there is the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a lagoon complex of brackish waters bordered to the east by the mountains, to the north by the ocean and to the west by the delta of the Magdalena River.
At the turn of the 2000s, the area was the scene of a bloody series of massacres done by the paramilitaries of the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) in order to have a strategic control of the area. The local population suffered a devastating violence, many civilians were tortured or murdered, many others were forced to abandon their lands and homes in order to survive.
Here is where in December 2014, David, an Italian anthropologist, meets Guillermo, human rights defender, who follows the legal battles of displaced people in the area. For this reason, he received death threats.
Guillermo leads David to meet the direct witnesses of the civil war, along the dusty roads and river routes, among the stilts of the floating village of Nueva Venecia and the desolating ruins of the abandoned Santa Rita. A mysterious and arcane microcosm, apparently immutable, and connected with the outside world only by the Magdalena River.
Thanks to the courage of the people who have decided to return, the area of Ciénaga Grande is slowly being repopulated and the community, exhausted by years of war between armed gangs, is hoping for justice and dignity.
The battle of Guillermo and his assistants is one of the few bulwarks of resistance against the logic of oppression, as well as to the total absence of the state.
Through the words of the interviewees, a series of stories retrace the threads lost in the memory of these invisible cities.
Painful tales, otherwise doomed to oblivion, kept for years in the waters of Magdalena River.
